MY DINNER WITH ANDRE

Movies come and go, mostly unseen when you are on the road. You don’t feel like you’ve missed anything until you begin to hear and read references to films which have changed the collective consciousness of those who stay at home. At some point, it’s like not having read a book in a long while. You begin to feel illiterate. And so, once you’ve settled into into one place for more than a couple of months, you begin to watch movies again.

Last night I had dinner with Andre.

In the movie, “My Dinner With Andre” Andre has been describing to Wally in great detail a mystical experience he had in Poland when Wally asks,

“Why is it that the normal things don’t ‘iven’ us anymore? Are we all a bunch of bored children sitting in the bathtub with our rubber ducks?”

Andre says, “Yes we are all bored now. Has it ever occurred to you that the process which creates this boredom that we see in the world now may very well be a self-perpetuating, unconscious form of brainwashing created by a totalitarian government based on money and that all of this is much more dangerous than one thinks?”

“And it’s not just a question of individual survival Wally, but that someone who is bored, is asleep, and someone who is asleep. will not say no.”

Hmm.

Andre: “I met this man the other day… he really feels that we are living in some kind of Orwellian nightmare – that everything you hear and read is turning you into a robot…”

Andre continues, “… I think that NY is the new model for the new concentration camp where the camp has been built by the inmates themselves, and the inmates are the guards and they have this pride in this thing they built. They built their own prison and so they exist in a state of schizophrenia where they are both the guards and prisoners and as a result they no longer have, having being lobotomized, the capacity to leave the prison or even to see it as a prison.'”

“The man said to me, ‘Escape before it’s too late.'”

“For two or three years. now Chikita and I have had this very unpleasant feeling that we really should get out. That we should feel like Jews did in the late 30’s and 40’s. Get out of here. Course the problem is where to go.”

The movie gets a little weird here as Andre talks about “points of light” across the planet where enlightenment is secretly taking place in an effort at survival.

He says, “In a way these are all attempts at creating a new kind of school or monasteries. Islands of safety, where history can be remembered where humans can continue to function in order to maintain the species through a dark age. In other words we’re talking about an underground which did exist in a different way in the dark ages among the mystical orders of the church, and the purpose of this mystical underground is to find out how to preserve the light, life, a culture, how to keep things living.”

“I keep thinking we need a new language,a language of the heart languages of the polish forest where language wasn’t needed, some kind of new language between people…the poetry of the dancing bee that tells us where the honey is.”

“In order to learn how to create that language you’re going to have to learn how to go through the looking glass to another kind of perception where you have a sense of being united to all things and suddenly you understand everything.”

Well said.
